Are you heading to the beach for vacation and itching to try your hand at surf fishing? Imagine reeling in big catches every day, making every sunrise and sunset a thrilling adventure! Let’s dive into the ultimate guide to ensure you make the most of your fishing experience and bring home fish for the family!

1. Research Your Fishing Locations: Know Before You Go!

Find Hotspots: Do research on facebook, fishing forums and youtube to find out where people are fishing. Look on google maps for fishing jetties, piers and inlets, these spots are all fish hotspots!

Fish Species: Research what kind of fish are commonly found in the waters of the beach you are planning to fish. Once you know what kind of fish are present, call around the local tackle shops to inquire more info on what fish are biting and on what baits.

2. Gear and Tackle: Equip Yourself for Success!

Rod and Reel: Arm yourself with a medium to heavy spinning rod (9-12 feet) and a matching reel – you’re ready for anything! The smaller the reel and rod, the more sensitive. You want a smaller and more sensitive rod to be able to detect smaller fish biting. You want a bigger set up for bigger fish and to cast further. Our Hey Skipper Rod is the perfect balance of sensitive and strong, perfect for travel as well because it is 5 pieces and breaks down 3 feet long.

Line: I exclusively use braided lines (20-30 lb test) for strength, casting distance and sensitivity.

Rigs: Fish finder rigs or high-low rigs with 2-4 oz sinkers are your keys to victory. We have both of these rigs already pre tied and ready to fish available in our shop! Our orange sinkers are one of a kind and perfect to attract more fish to your hooks.

Bait: Load up on live or fresh bait like shrimp, sand fleas, crabs, salted baits and cut bait. Salted baits last in your bag and are perfect for travel. We make these items in-house and offer a variety of different baits. Salted shrimp, squid and clams are our best sellers and work at almost any beach.

3. Timing Your Fishing: THE PERFECT TIME TO GO!

Tides: Check the tide charts online! Start fishing during the high tide/low tide and wait for the changing tides for peak activity – it’s fish rush hour!

Dawn and Dusk: The magic hours of early morning and late evening are your golden ticket to success. It is also far less hot!

Weather: Overcast skies and gentle winds are perfect conditions for fishing!

4. Reading the Beach: Finding the Fish!

Structure: Look for sandbars, troughs, and cuts – these are where most of the fish will be hunting for food!

Depth: Experiment with casting distances – cast one rod close and the other rod far, sometimes the biggest catches are closer than you think!

5. Local Knowledge: Learn the local tricks!

Talk to Locals: Visit the local bait shops, chat with fellow anglers, and soak up the local knowledge.

Guided Trips: Consider a guided surf fishing adventure – learn from the pros and remember what they teach you.
